Neoadjuvant Treatment of
Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST)
The term "neoadjuvant treatment" refers to therapy that is given with a goal of reducing the size of a tumor before surgery.
If your GIST is too large to be surgically removed, or if the location of the tumor makes surgery too risky, your doctor may prescribe drug treatment with a TKI. Depending on the tumor's response to treatment, the doctor may recommend that you either:
- Stay on the TKI treatment for as long as there is a clinical benefit
- Undergo surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible
