Advanced/Metastatic GIST
In many cases, a GIST cannot be completely removed by surgery. It may be too large, or it may be in a location that makes surgery too risky. It may also have spread to other locations in the body, such as the liver. (Tumors that have spread from their original location are called "advanced" or "metastatic.")
Studies have shown that treatment with a TKI can extend the time until a tumor progresses (grows larger or spreads) in patients with advanced or metastatic GIST. TKI treatment is not a cure for GIST, but it may shrink the tumor(s) or cause them to stop growing.
