Importance of Continued Treatment for Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST)
If you have had surgery that completely removed your tumor, your doctor may still prescribe treatment with a TKI to help prevent the GIST from coming back. The reason is, even if the entire tumor was removed, it is very possible that a few abnormal cells have remained, among nearby cells or somewhere else in the GI tract or liver. These cells can multiply and form a new GIST. Studies have shown that, without TKI treatment, 4 to 5 of every 10 people who have their GIST removed will develop a new tumor within 2 years.

TKI treatment can help prevent the return of GIST
Taking a daily treatment after surgery can significantly reduce the risk of GIST coming back. Research has shown that the number of patients who remain tumor-free holds steady after receiving TKI treatment for 1 year following surgery, while many of those patients who do not receive treatment can have their tumors return in as little as 6 months.
