GISTs are currently the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, with an estimated 3300 to 6000 new cases reported each year in the United States.1,2 Approximately 2500 of these cases are metastatic at diagnosis.3

The diagnosis of KIT+ GIST can be determined with immunohistochemical staining. More recently, identification of specific KIT mutations have been shown to have prognostic value in GISTs.

Therapeutic drug monitoring can be useful to establish a baseline, monitor adherence, and optimize dosing of TKIs/KIT inhibitors. This can be particularly valuable in patients who are not responding or experiencing side effects.
