Radiologic Evaluation of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors ( GISTs)
View City Scan

This series of CT scans and PET scans illustrates some of the possible outcomes following treatment with a KIT inhibitor. Click on the descriptions below to view the images and brief commentary on the interpretation of the findings.

Increase in tumor size and density of 2 or
more masses that cannot be managed with localized therapy1

This example represents generalized progression. The identifying features of generalized progression include increases in tumor size in the absence of a decrease in tumor density in 2 or more masses that cannot be managed with localized therapy.

Localized therapy options include surgical removal of resectable tumors and procedures such as radiofrequency ablation and hepatic artery embolization in the case of liver metastases.

Scan A

Scan A is a CT image of 2 mesenteric GISTs.1
Scan B

Scan B was taken 1 month after treatment initiation and shows an increase in tumor size and thickness of the tumor wall.1
Scan C

Scan C was taken 2 months after treatment initiation. It shows a further progression, as indicated by an even greater increase in size and tumor wall thickness. This patient was evaluated for surgical resection and other local therapeutic measures but was not considered a candidate.1
These images are from a single patient and may not be typical or representative of all patients receiving treatment.
